The Time Machine

The Time Machine

What if you could face, feel, and heal from your past? You can, in a sense, travel back in time and attempt to heal from the wounds you've received or given to others. My art practice has played a major role in this for me. More often than not, I derive deep personal meaning from works I've created, after the fact. It's like my subconscious is guiding me, and only revealing the whole story until after the piece is done, or sometimes years later.

Inspired by countless gauges and machinery I've photographed over the years in vintage stores, and images from a Russian photographer friend of mine, I put these elements together to create a handmade time machine, cobbled together from Russian and American technology. More importantly than the physical tech, it's powered by human emotion and nostalgia. Some of the elements feature lines of poetry written by a friend, focussing on the theme of lament: not avoiding, but facing our past hurts head on.

Multiple panels of hand-cut collage, acrylic and pencil color on masonite, framed. Overall size: 60.75 x 50.5 x 2.5".
