I recently read the account of Apollo astronauts and the unidentified "music" they clearly heard while in orbit around the earth. They didn't know what to make of it, and decided not to share their experience until years later. This affected me greatly.
 
Aside from this auditory effect, astronauts are said to experience the "Overview Effect" while in space: a profound cognitive shift characterized by a sudden, overwhelming realization of the planet's fragility, unity and interconnectedness. Conversely, some have returned with a complete sense of dread. They oftentimes completely change the course of their life based on this experience.
 
As we progress in space travel, especially long distance space travel in the future, our astronauts will have to undergo intense psychological training to be able to cope with this new reality.
